From the tropics to the desert, Dr. Powell joined Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine in August 2019 after seven years of course directing and teaching Physiology to medical students at St. George’s University School of Medicine on the Caribbean island of Grenada.
Originally from Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and of Jamaican descent, Dr. Powell’s journey in the medical field led her on many adventurous travels. After receiving an Honors Bachelor of Science degree in Honors Biology with a minor in Psychology from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, she obtained her Doctor of Philosophy degree in Biomedical Sciences, Microbiology and Immunology from Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia.
Dr. Powell’s passion for teaching and imparting her medical knowledge with her peers earned her a faculty position at Morehouse School of Medicine where she course directed and taught Physiology to both medical and graduate students for five years. There, she also created and directed a Physiology in-course enrichment program which was consequently expanded into an Office for Student Learning. Her subsequent faculty appointments were teaching Physiology to medical students at Ross University School of Medicine on the Caribbean island of Dominica and at the Oceania University of Medicine which remotely educated students located in Apia, Samoa, and across the Australian continent.
Coming from an allopathic background, Dr. Powell looks forward to her new adventure teaching in an osteopathic medical university. She is passionate about helping students become critical thinkers and life-long learners so as to achieve their greatest potential as they journey through their medical careers.
Dr. Powell’s greatest joy is spending time with her beautiful son and two toy poodles, traveling/visiting family and friends internationally, being in the gym, and/or playing a sport.
