March 31, 2020 | How RVU Students Can Volunteer During a Crisis

Hello Students,

Each region of the country has varying levels of need for people to help in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. You may have heard that students in some major surge areas have been able to contribute in various support roles. We know that some of you are interested in volunteering as well. RVU commends your spirit of compassion and dedication to service but wants to remind you that volunteering is optional. Your decision to volunteer your services to society is purely a personal choice and is not an RVU expectation.

Potential volunteer roles may include:

  1. Support roles in hospitals to help comfort the sick in overflow areas.
  2. Support roles in hospitals to transport patients.
  3. Support roles in hospitals for medical documentation.
  4. Support roles from home, assisting in telephone triage and guidance.
  5. Support roles from home, assisting staff with paperwork necessary for emergency credentialing of providers, and other such tasks.
  6. Support roles in various locations to screen or test people.
  7. Support roles in various community settings to help workers deliver needed community services.

Students interested in volunteering must understand and adhere to the following guidelines:

  1. Student volunteer hours do not count towards educational credit
  2. Student volunteers should not be financially compensated
  3. All volunteer activities would be in addition to any required RVU coursework.
    1. Please consider your workload carefully before volunteering.
  4. You must sign an RVU attestation that states you are volunteering at your own risk and not in the capacity as a RVU student.  You will receive an email tomorrow with instructions on how to access an online, fillable attestation form that you must complete.

Thank you for professional and flexible responses to this extraordinary situation. Your professionalism is a testimony to the excellent quality of RVU students.

Take care of yourselves and each other!
