RVU Graduates Match into Medical Residency Programs

[March 30, 2020] RVU is pleased to announce that all of its graduates from Class of 2020 have been accepted into medical residency programs following the National Residency Matching Program’s (NRMP) Main Residency Match®. After four years of dedicated study in RVU’s rigorous osteopathic medicine curriculum, the graduates will now train in their chosen specialties for the next three to seven years.

According to a press release from the NRMP, this year was the first time that all allopathic and osteopathic applicants participated in a Single Match, a result of the creation of a single accreditation system for graduate medical education. As such, the Single Match was the largest match year on record for all medical students, with more than 40,000 active applicants competing for over 37,000 positions; the number of osteopathic applicants also increased by more than 1,000.

After applying and interviewing for residency programs of their choice, RVU’s graduates created a preference list that was sent to the NRMP. Program directors ranked students as well and both lists were processed using a computerized mathematical algorithm. On Match Day (the third Friday of March), students received their match results for local residency programs including Poudre Valley Hospital, St. Joseph Hospital, St. Mary Corwin Medical Center, HealthONE/Sky Ridge Medical Center, and University of Colorado.

Graduates will also be training nationally at Cleveland Clinic Foundation, New York Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education, Akron’s Children’s Hospital Pediatrics, Emory University School of Medicine, and more. Additionally, those from Class of 2020 who will be commissioned as military officers upon graduation will complete residencies at Brooke Army Medical Center, Eisenhower Medical Center, Naval Medical Center, and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, among others.

“[Class of 2020] entered one of the most important milestones of their young medical careers,” said Thomas N. Told, DO, FACOFP dist., Dean and Vice President of Academic Affairs. “With true osteopathic resolve, they faced the challenge head on, and matched into some very impressive institutions.”

The top specialties graduates will be entering are family medicine, internal medicine, general surgery, and pediatrics. Graduates were also matched into excellent specialty programs such as anesthesiology, psychiatry, neurology, obstetrics-gynecology, urology, ophthalmology, pathology, and more.

The NRMP Main Residency Match® is one of four match programs that fourth-year students participated in, with the majority of students (98.7%) finding a residency placement through NRMP. Earlier in the year, one RVU student matched through the AUA Urology Residency Match Program and another through the San Francisco Ophthalmology Match Program, while students on the Health Professions Scholarship Program matched into military-specific residency programs (12.5%).
