RVUCOM-CO Graduates Match into Medical Residency Programs

[March 20, 2019] RVU is pleased to announce that all of its graduates from Class of 2019 have been accepted into medical residency programs following the National Residency Matching Program’s (NRMP) Main Residency Match®. After four years of dedicated study in RVU’s rigorous osteopathic medicine curriculum, the graduates will now train in their chosen specialty for the next three to seven years.

According to the NRMP, this year was the largest match year on record, with more than 44,600 applicants competing for some 35,000 positions (the most positions ever offered in the Match). The expansion of positions is due, in part, to a growing number of osteopathic medical programs in the Match - a result of the ongoing transition to a single accreditation system for graduate medical education. After undergoing the application process, graduates received their results on Match Day (the third Friday of March), which the NRMP delivers using a computer algorithm to match the preferences of applicants with those of residency and program directors across the country.

This year, RVU’s student doctors were matched into local residency programs at area hospitals and medical schools including Sky Ridge Medical Center, St. Anthony North Hospital, North Colorado Medical Center, St. Joseph Hospital SCL Health-CO, and the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Graduates will also be training nationally at University of California Davis Medical Center, George Washington University, The University of Texas Health Science Center, Children’s Hospital-Northeast Ohio Medical University, University of Connecticut School of Medicine, Darnall Army Medical Center, and more.

“Beginning with our inaugural Class of 2012, RVU has had a consistent track record of excellent residency matches. This year’s match was another example of that,” said Michael Tieman, MD, FACS, Chair Emeritus of the Department of Specialty Medicine and Director of Student Advisory Program. “[We had] 100% of our graduating students secure residencies, with students matching into very competitive specialties and outstanding programs.”

The top specialties graduates will be entering are family medicine, internal medicine, emergency medicine, and pediatrics. Graduates were also matched into excellent specialty programs such as anesthesiology, psychiatry, neurology, obstetrics-gynecology, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, vascular surgery, orthopedic surgery, pathology, and more.

“We could not be more pleased with the graduating Class of 2019, who had excellent results in the Military and AOA matches earlier this year, with the majority of that class then entering the largest NRMP match in history,” said Thomas N. Told, DO, FACOFP dist., Dean of RVUCOM and Vice President of Academic Affairs. “They endured a massive computer failure and a bomb cyclone before the process was finished. In the end, all members of the RVUCOM Class of 2019 had a residency position, [and] we had much to celebrate!”

The NRMP Main Residency Match® is one of three match programs that fourth-year students participated in, with the majority of students (79%) finding a residency placement through NRMP. Earlier in the year, RVU students matched into their top choices through the AOA Intern/Resident Registration Program (12%), while students on the Health Professions Scholarship Program matched into military-specific residency programs (9%). A complete list of the specialties with program locations can be found on the RVU website here.
