August 20, 2020 | Covid-19 Response Team Update

Dear RVU Family:

School is back in session. Most primary, secondary and post- secondary institutions have recently opened their doors to students. The CRT will carefully monitor the course of new cases and consequences of students going back to school. As a health sciences university, RVU should be the gold standard in the thoughtful management of education – especially during challenging times. Please continue to be an ambassador of professional behavior and lead by example.

Please read the following:

  • Unfortunately, there are been a number of threats, hackers, scammers and hate crimes related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Terry Meyer, Manager of Public Safety and Security Emergency Manager on our Utah Campus (and a member of the CRT Team), has shared a link to FBI information and resources to educate and protect the public. The information is available here.
  • New Self-Serve Print Center procedures have been developed for students on the Utah Campus. These procedures, which are in place during Phase Blue, can be found on the COVID-19 Webpage, or read about them here. Colorado Students will continue to have access to the on-site print center.
  • Student Affairs has posted their Event Approval Plan Policy for student events and fundraising for associations, clubs, and organizations in effect during Phase Blue. All proposals and/or plans for student events are to go through Student Affairs (Director of Student Life) and not be sent to the COVID Response Team. The policy is available on the COVID Webpage or by clicking here.

COVID-19 MYTHBUSTERS

MYTH: Only a very small percentage of COVID-19 patients develop serious complications and die. Therefore, it would be better if most people just got infected so we can all benefit from herd immunity.

FACT: The current estimated case fatality rate for the U.S. is 3.1% according to John Hopkins, which would result in an unacceptable number of deaths. To put things into perspective, even if the fatality was 0.5% this would mean 1.7 million deaths for our population of 330 million if everyone got infected. Further, new reports are suggesting that previous SARC-CoV2 infections may not provide reliable or long lasting protection.

Have a safe and healthy weekend. Thank you for your continued vigilance, professionalism and for helping us remain RVU Strong!

Best regards,

COVID-19 Response Team
