RVU Receives Military Friendly Top 10 School Gold Award [January 29, 2019] Rocky Vista University (RVU) has been awarded a Top 10 School Gold Award by Military Friendly® for its exemplary military educational programs and veteran initiatives. RVU has been honored with the Gold distinction under the non-traditional category. This distinction is reserved for schools scoring within the top 10% of their category. RVU ranked 7th of all schools in its category receiving the Military Friendly® School designation. The Military Friendly® awards provide a competitive view of how an organization is performing compared to similar organizations. To be considered for the award, schools must first receive the designation of Military Friendly®. Global Medicine Open House Celebrates RVU’s Role in Global Health [November 15, 2018] Rocky Vista University (RVU) hosted a Global Medicine Open House at the Frank Ritchel Ames Memorial Library on Monday, November 12th. The open house celebrated RVU’s Global Medicine Program and its successful training of student doctors in providing quality healthcare for rural and underserved communities worldwide. العاب القمار Guest speaker Dr. Camille Z. RVUCOM-SU Hosts Military Appreciation Ceremony [October 18, 2018] RVUCOM-SU hosted its 2nd Annual Military Appreciation Ceremony on October 12th at the Southern Utah Veterans Home (SUVH). David J. Park, DO, FAAFP, FACOFP, Vice President and Dean for the Southern Utah Campus, and Natalie Pratt, OMS II, began the ceremony by introducing the school and welcoming guests, including veterans and future military physicians. RVU military students then conducted the Posting of Colors, a traditional flag ceremony which was presented by Brandon Trujillo, OMS II, Zachary Cetraro, OMS II, Kristen Zachariah, OMS I, and Benjamin Memmott, OMS II. Clinton E. Adams, DO, FACHE, President and CEO of RVU and retired Rear admiral, spoke about the core values of military service and honored those who serve to protect their country and heal fellow soldiers. RVUCOM-SU Welcomes Class of 2022 [October 3, 2018] Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine – Southern Utah (RVUCOM-SU) held its White Coat Ceremony at the Tuacahn Center for the Arts in Ivins, Utah on September 22nd. Approximately 1,000 were in attendance or participating in this annual event. The White Coat Ceremony is a medical school tradition that welcomes new students into the medical profession. Keynote speaker Donna Milavetz, MD, MPH, FACP, addressed the students about the importance of practicing self-care and being a compassionate physician. Dr. Milavetz is the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Medical Officer of OnSite Care Clinics who is focused on improving healthcare outcomes by providing high quality primary care services to Utah’s employer based communities. Utah ranks 44th in the nation for primary care physicians, with 58.4 active primary care physicians per 100,000 people. The ceremony was emceed by David J. A Day of Celebration During Healthcare Simulation Week [September 21, 2018] Rocky Vista University’s (RVU) Institute of Medical and Surgical Simulation held a day of celebration during Healthcare Simulation Week on September 19th. Created by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, the event celebrated the accomplishments of RVU’s Simulation Program, as well as the professionals who use simulation to improve the safety, effectiveness, and efficiency of healthcare services every day. Led by Susan Carter, MD, Director of the Institute for Medical and Surgical Simulation, the event allowed students, faculty and staff to learn about upcoming projects and the role of simulation in healthcare education. As part of RVU’s program offerings, healthcare providers including medical students, physician assistants, surgery residents and first responders are able to practice surgical skills, deliver babies, learn heart murmurs, and respond to emergency situations using disaster and mass casualty simulations. RVU Welcomes Inaugural Class of 2020 to the Physician Assistant Program [September 12, 2018] Rocky Vista University (RVU) is proud to announce the matriculation of the inaugural class into its new Physician Assistant (PA) program. The PA Class of 2020 is comprised of 33 students from a variety of backgrounds and locations, and consists of 67% females and 33% males. The average cumulative GPA for the incoming class was 3.44. Upon the completion of the 27-month-long program, the physician assistant students will graduate with a Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS) degree in one of America’s fastest growing medical disciplines. Based on a competency-based medical education (CBME) model, the program faculty has designed an innovative curriculum that will produce clinically competent, compassionate and collaborative physician assistants. RVU’s Institute of Medical and Surgical Granted Continued Accreditation Rocky Vista University (RVU) is pleased to announce that its top-of-the-line simulation center has been granted continued accreditation as a Comprehensive Education Institute with the American College of Surgeons (ACS). The center, named the Institute of Medical and Surgical Simulation, must complete an Annual Compliance Report in order to meet the standards and criteria set forth by the ACS-AEI program. The goal of the program is to promote patient safety through the use of simulation, develop new technologies, identify best practices, and promote research and collaboration among the institutes. To be granted continued accreditation, the Institute of Medical and Surgical Simulation must evaluate the effectiveness of its education through faculty assessments, continuous improvement of training programs, involvement in simulation-based research and scholarly activities, and an assessment of learning, performance and outcomes. To date, RVU is the only osteopathic medical school to receive this accreditation by the ACS. Additionally, it is one out of only two medical schools in the Mountain West region to hold this distinction. RVUCOM Honored with Two Awards from the AOA [July 30, 2018] Rocky Vista University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine (RVUCOM) was honored during a recent House of Delegates meeting in Chicago. The American Osteopathic Association (AOA) recognized leaders of the osteopathic medical profession for raising its visibility through brand awareness, research, access to care around the world, and osteopathic medical education. The Presidential Citation, which is the AOA’s highest honor, was awarded to Clinton E. Adams, DO, FACHE, President and Chief Executive Officer for his “exemplary career of military service, outstanding osteopathic medical education, and advocacy on behalf of the profession”. He served in the U.S. Navy, where he was a command surgeon and attained the rank of rear admiral. Dr. Adams also sits on the board for Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, where he offers input into the policies of medical residency programs in the country. RVU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine (RVUCOM) was also honored with the Strategic Team Award and Recognition (STAR) Award. RVU-SU Campus Holds a Multi-Agency Active Shooter Simulation [July 13, 2018] Rocky Vista University Southern Utah campus participated in an active shooter training to help university staff and first responders practice how to respond to this type of emergency. The active shooter functional exercise was a three hour, multi-jurisdictional, and multi-agency exercise that was conducted in the interior and exterior of the Rocky Vista University College of Medicine (COM) building. This exercise fulfilled the requirements of the U.S. Department of Education, Jeanne Clery Act. The purpose of the exercise was to assess and increase the ability of Rocky Vista University (RVU) and other local entities to efficiently and effectively respond to and manage an active shooter event. Terry Meyer, Supervisor of Public Safety and Security for the Southern Utah Campus, worked with a number of agencies over the last several weeks to arrange this training, including Santa Clara/Ivins Police, Fire, and EMS; Washington County Sheriff’s Department; Dixie State University Police; Mercy Air (Nevada); Intermountain Life Flight; and Southwest Utah Public Health Department.
