Applying to RVU’s Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences Program? Here’s What You Need to Know

By: Julia David, MBA, Program Enrollment Specialist

Applying to the RVU Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences (MSBS) program is a great steppingstone for students pursuing a future in healthcare. This program is designed to strengthen your academic foundation and demonstrate your ability to succeed in rigorous, graduate-level coursework. While admission can be competitive, the program values applicants who present a well-rounded application and a clear, demonstrated commitment to a healthcare career. Applications are submitted through PostBacCAS and it’s recommended to apply by late summer.

Commit to Academics

Your academic performance plays a key role in your application. MSBS programs are particularly helpful for students who may need to strengthen their GPA or science coursework before applying to professional schools like medical, dental, or PA programs. Success in an MSBS program shows that you can handle the demands of graduate-level science courses and are serious about advancing in healthcare. At RVU, that success often translates directly into opportunity: *92% of 2024 MSBS graduates matriculated into RVUCOM.

Be Authentic

Your personal statement and letters of recommendation are essential components of your application. Use your essay to explain your long-term goals in healthcare, reflect on what has motivated your path so far, and express how an MSBS program fits into your journey. It is important to be honest, specific, and thoughtful as admissions committees value genuine passion and self-awareness. Letters of recommendation should come from academic or professional mentors who can speak to your potential for success in a challenging academic environment.

Showcase Resilience

Importantly, MSBS programs recognize and value persistence and dedication, especially in applicants from non-traditional backgrounds or those with lower academic metrics. Showing that you are committed to a healthcare career—despite past challenges—can be just as impactful as high grades or test scores. A strong MSBS application reflects not just academic readiness, but also resilience, clarity of purpose, and the drive to grow as a future healthcare professional.

In Summary:

  • Start early and plan ahead: Give yourself plenty of time to complete the application, especially if you’re considering retaking the MCAT or enrolling in extra courses to raise your GPA. Applying early means you won’t feel rushed and can focus on putting together the strongest application possible.
  • Tell your story in your essay: Use your personal statement to talk about your long-term healthcare goals and what’s brought you here. Be real, thoughtful, and clear about how the MSBS program fits into your plan.
  • Pick the right recommenders: Ask academic or professional mentors who really know you and can speak to your potential in a challenging academic setting. Solid letters go a long way.
  • Show your persistence and purpose: Even if your stats aren’t perfect, what matters is your drive. The program values students who are committed to healthcare and willing to put in the work to get there—especially those coming from non-traditional paths.
