Celebration of Movement Skyline Trail Airport Tunnel Project

Welcome to Celebration of Movement, a mural located inside the pedestrian tunnel at Swords Park end of Skyline Trail under N 27th Ave.

Artists: Alexandra Urquiza & Mikaila Ng

Project Overview

This mural features a dynamic array of figures in motion, highlighting the beauty of all bodies. Our goal is to honor the diverse expressions of movement within our community, fostering inclusivity and connection. Crafted with love and dedication, this mural is the result of countless hours volunteered by local students and community members, transforming a once gray space into a bright, welcoming work of art that inspires creativity and unity. Join us in experiencing the energy of our community through Celebration of Movement.

This project would not have been possible without the generous support of Big Sky Economic Development’s grant funding. Thank you to all of the community members who volunteered their time to help make this mural come to life.

Anyone can paint!

The coloring book like design style of the mural was intentional to make participation accessible regardless of artistic ability. This facilitated outreach and increased the amount of people who felt excited rather than scared to participate. The ages of participants ranged from 5 – 75years old, each person left their physical mark in Billings with their brushstrokes and their signature on the wall. Local Girl scout troops came in the early stages and shared their ideas for the blank sections and were so excited to have their ideas listened to and brought to life on the walls.

Anatomy in the Arts

The rendering of the musculature of the figures is a rudimentary illustration of functional muscle groups and sensory nerve distribution and provided an incredible opportunity to introduce these concepts, especially to young volunteers.

The Four tenets of Osteopathic Medicine

The four tenets of osteopathic medicine are the foundational principles that guide our education and future practice as osteopathic physicians.

  1. The body is a unit; the person is a unit of body, mind and spirit.
  1. The body is capable of self-regulation, self-healing and health maintenance.
  1. Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated.
  1. Rational treatment is based upon an understanding of the basic principles of body unity, self-regulation and the interrelationship of structure and function.

The first tenet of osteopathic medicine inspired this mural. When learning about physical activity as a treatment recommendation, osteopathic medical students are taught all the science behind how it improves blood chemistry and cardiovascular fitness, this addresses the person’s body. We are also taught to care for their mind and soul which considers their accessibility to safe walkways, anxiety about exercise and even feelings of loneliness if they aren’t supported at home. These tenets teach us to work collaboratively with our patients to care for their health in ways that prioritize their values.

What is Osteopathic Medicine?

Center for Disease Control (CDC)- Benefits of Physical Activity

Physical activity has many immediate and long-term health benefits to both physical and mental health. Even though sports are a great way to achieve the recommended amount of physical activity, it’s not the only way! You can achieve the recommendation by going on walks, having a dance party and even choosing to take the stairs rather than the elevator.
More information about the health benefits of physical activity is available on this CDC website:

City of Billings Department of Parks and Recreation

The City of Billings’ Department of Parks and Recreation were an amazing partner in the creation of this mural. Additionally, they provide several opportunities for sports and additional programming that can become an avenue to increase your physical activity and contribute to the growing community.

“We know that being active is beneficial for the health of the body, but doing so in community and in ways where you feel celebrated is crucial for the health of the mind and soul.”
