Rocky Vista University partners with ZooMontana for Wilderness Medicine Event focusing on Bites & Stings

(MEDIA OPPORTUNITY: RVU Bites & Stings Event on Wednesday, February 19 starting at12 p.m. at ZooMontana, 2100 S Shiloh Rd)

Billings, Montana – ZooMontana is partnering with Rocky Vista University Montana College of Osteopathic Medicine (RVU-MCOM) to provide medical students a unique learning experience focused on bites and stings from wildlife commonly encountered in Montana. This hands-on event will allow students to learn about real-world medical scenarios not typically covered in the classroom.

During the event, RVU-MCOM students will have the opportunity to study wildlife behavior, identify major families of snakes, and familiarize themselves with common bites and stings found in the region. Students will then practice key skills, including how to assess, manage, and mitigate acute pain, while also applying wound management techniques in these types of emergencies.

The RVU Wilderness Medicine Track students take this track because it is designed to prepare students for real-world wilderness first aid and emergency preparedness. The two-year program immerses students into the topics they have already been learning in the classroom, including various North American wilderness and austere medical scenarios, allowing them to plan and prioritize essential items for wilderness medical kits. Hands-on experience like this equips students with the skills needed to respond to medical emergencies in rural and wilderness settings.

This event reflects RVU-MCOM’s commitment to rural and wilderness medicine, as well as its focus on field experiences and rural externships.
